Chief Investment Officer, Large Family Office in UAE

Our Client, a very private and large family office in UAE needed a Chief Investment Officer. It is a multi billion dollar real estate fund focused on Europe and needs to target long term gains with extensive due diligence checks on each potential acquisition. The role was very confidential and sensitive due to internal senior management not being aware of the new hire. The CEO at the client took personal responsibility for the role and briefed Madison Pearl on his expectations.

Snapshot of the search process:

  • The client had very high expectations regarding the calibre of the individual in terms of academics, institutions and quality of experience. The client expected the successful candidate to have executed at least ten deals and each ticket over $100mn.
  • We did an extensive map of the market and focused on candidates in London and Paris because the fund was European centric.
  • The successful candidate offered was ex GLG and Goldman Sachs with over $13bn of transactions on his deal sheet. His background check included lawyers in Hong Kong we spoken to, CFOs in large American firms and partners of Goldman Sachs based in New York and London.
  • There were extensive background checks carried out that took time to conclude. We managed the candidate closely so he was informed throughout the process.
  • The Client asked us to be hands on helping the candidate move his family and 4 children out from London and based themselves in Dubai. We advised a real estate agent to assist him settle in and which schools had the best reputation.
  • The candidate has almost finished his first year with the client and introduced us to some of his previous colleagues to help them move out to the region. We have also helped him recruit for his team as he expands the number of portfolio managers.
  • This was a particularly challenging search since the client wanted a very senior and impressive candidate but we were not allowed to disclose the identity of the family until after the offer stage. We built up enough trust with the client that we could fill this role and keep their name anonymous and enough trust with the successful candidate so he would join a company but not immediately know which family was behind it.
